Turkey Bowling for Charity!

It’s late Fall in Seattle. A time when most of the leaves have fallen to the ground, the days are shorter with gray rainy skies, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This means only one thing for Seattle area brewers – it’s time for Turkey Bowl!

Each year in November, Seattle area brewers descend upon West Seattle Bowl to participate in what has become a legendary industry event in the region. An event designed to give back to the community through beer, bowling and the enormous generosity of the participating breweries, their families, friends, local businesses and industry vendors. Everyone comes together to make the event a huge success, and in turn helping out the local community and assisting those in need.

Now in its 19th year, Turkey Bowl is the creation of local philanthropic organization, Beer Church. Founded by Kendall Jones in 1997, Beer Church’s mission is simple: doing-good for the neighborhood through beer. Though they raise money for several causes through the powerful goodwill of beer, Turkey Bowl has become their flagship event and continues to sell-out each year.

This year, Turkey Bowl raised $7,000, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the West Seattle Food Bank. The money is raised through bowling lane registration fees, a raffle full of amazing items donated by the breweries and local businesses, and generous donations from everyone involved. There is also a food drive collection on site, bringing in over 1,500 lbs of food.

It’s common knowledge that beer is mandatory when bowling and that’s where Beer Church IPA comes perfectly into play. Created as a collaboration beer for the event, Beer Church IPA is a hazy New England style IPA brewed by Two Beers Brewing, Georgetown Brewing and Airways Brewing. This year, the beer was brewed at Two Beers Brewing, producing 30 barrels with all ingredients happily donated by Country Malt Group, Great Western Malting and YCH Hops. The beer production rotates between the three breweries each year depending on who has the capacity at the time.

Not only is Beer Church IPA the flagship beer served at Turkey Bowl, it is also self-distributed through the taprooms of the three collaborative breweries. It can also be found in the finer taprooms and beer bars in the Seattle area while it lasts. All proceeds from sales of Beer Church IPA are donated to the Crones & Colitis Foundation of America, raising over $12,000 for the foundation each year.

It’s great to see so much good coming from so much fun! I was honored to participate in such a great event with such great people, and am already looking forward to next year’s Turkey Bowl!
